CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Orion sits on the seat next to me, his little warm furriness bumping against my side as we drive along the woodland road. I take it slow, not wanting to let myself become too distracted, but the cat is keeping me calm now, and I feel so much better just for having him here.

As we pass by the diner and the gas station I notice that it still seems just as busy as it was before I went into town. I feel an ache of hunger. Orion meows as if he is reading my mind and is hungry too, I look down at him and smile.

“We’ll be home any second,” I tell him. “And I’ll feed you, don’t worry.”

I pull off the main road to the gates of Woodmont. I slow and wait for them to open and then I continue through. The trees darken above us and Orion stands up, putting his paws on my thigh as he looks up and out of the windows. His eyes are wide and his ears flatten slightly before he hisses and I bite my lip.

“It’s okay, kitten,” I whisper. “They’re here to protect us.”

I wonder what he can see up there in the trees that I can’t, whether his night vision lets him see what the eyes belong to. He grumbles a low growl and sits back down, tucking his paws underneath and looking up at me again adoringly.

He really is a cute little thing.

As we emerge from the tunnel of trees and the massive house looms up ahead of us I can see a car I don’t know parked there on the driveway.

“Marian’s clients,” I tell Orion. “We will have to sneak you into the house.”

He blinks at me slowly. I’m sure he can understand every single word I’m saying.

I pull the car out of sight from the window of Marian’s study, and then I kill the engine. I grab my purse and open it, motioning for Orion to jump in. There’s a part of me that for a split second thinks he won’t do it, but he does without any more encouraging than that and it makes me laugh.

“Good boy,” I tell him as I stroke his head and tickle behind his ear.

I close it up just enough so it isn’t totally obvious I am getting out of the car with a cat in my handbag, then I bump the door closed with my hip and carry the bag carefully in front of me in both arms. I hurry around the edge of the house and towards the back doors of the orangery. I peer through the tall windows, double-checking I can’t see Marian anywhere inside.

The coast appears clear so I open the door and slip into the orangery. It’s warm, and the scent of citrus and cloves are still hanging in the air. I tiptoe in, the house completely silent apart from the bubbling of Marian’s cauldron on the stove. Next to it on the counter, I see
